Special Welcome to NCF Students
New College of Florida students are welcome to take this free data science course
I have spent a lot of time talking and writing about New College of Florida. Consider my proposed mission statement for NCF and my recommendations for a proper classical liberal arts curriculum. Although all students are welcome to take this course, the purpose of this post is to provide a special invitation to NCF students, both current and admitted.
Kane’s (Free) Data Science Course will run for 8 weeks this summer, starting on Monday, June 3rd and ending on Thursday, August 8th, with a two week vacation in the middle. The workload is 10 hours per week: 3 hours in class with former Harvard Preceptor David Kane, lecturing live on Zoom at 8:00 PM ET on M/W/Th and 7 hours of work completed by students on their own. By the end of this course, students will be able to do basic data science! There is no charge.
Check out the final projects created by prior students. Want to make something like that? Take the course!
There are no prerequisites. The programming language we will be using is R. You must have a computer with R, RStudio and Git installed. You must be able to use Zoom and to share your screen. The course is designed for absolute beginners. Neither programming nor statistics experience is required.
There is much discussion of Techne at NCF. One faculty member remarked that “Techne is so broad, no one understands what it is.” For me, Techne means a course which (significantly) increases students’ odds of getting the future they want. That is this course.
